Supporting Effective and Cost-Efficient Climate Solutions

The CLIMIT programme provides financial support for the development of CCS technologies. It is a joint initiative between Gassnova SF and the Research Council of Norway.

The CLIMIT programme aims to advance knowledge, expertise, technologies and solutions that can contribute significantly to reducing costs and accelerating the widespread international deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS). CLIMIT provides financial support for research, development and demonstration of CO₂ management technologies. The programme consists of two funding schemes: CLIMIT R&D, administered by the Research Council of Norway, and CLIMIT Demo, administered by Gassnova. Gassnova has overall responsibility for coordinating the programme and leads the programme secretariat.

The Board of Directors of Gassnova approves grants from the Fund for CO₂ Management, based on recommendations from the programme secretariat. CLIMIT provides funding on an ongoing basis. The Research Council of Norway’s Portfolio Board for Energy and Transport makes funding decisions on applications related to CO₂ management. The programme targets industry, research institutes, universities and university colleges, often in collaboration with international companies and research institutions, to accelerate the commercialisation of CCS technologies. CLIMIT aims to maintain a balanced project portfolio and supports technology development projects across all stages of the development process, up to commercialisation.

CLIMIT was established by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy in 2005 to support the development of CO₂ capture and storage technologies for gas-fired power plants. In 2008, the funding scheme was expanded to include power generation based on all fossil fuels, and in 2010, industrial emissions were also included. Since 2021, the scheme has covered all potential sources of CO₂. The CLIMIT programme has made significant contributions to technological development and capacity building in Norway, both within the research community and among industry partners.
