Technical and economic feasibility study for an absorption based CO₂ capture process involving precipitation (Precipitating Absorption)

Liquid – solid phase change by absorbents has been identified as one of the next generation CO₂ absorption concepts with promising potential for cost reduction. Over many years, SINTEF has developed absorbents that improve catch efficiency by using precipitating CO₂ absorbents. Westec Environmental Solutions (WES) technology has developed gaskets that allow precipitation during CO₂ absorption without causing plugging.

The project is a collaboration between SINTEF, WES and Carbon Management Canada (CMC) to develop a solvent / contactor integrated solution for CO₂ capture.
This pilot project is conducting a technical economic feasibility study for an absorption based CO₂ capture process with precipitation systems developed by SINTEF in combination with a gas-liquid contactor gasket developed by WES. The goal of the project is to provide results that can be used as a basis for establishing new projects together with WES, SINTEF, BC Research, CMC and investors.

The primary objectives of the feasibility study are to determine the energy benefit of the precipitating system for the CO₂ absorption process and to assess the technical compatibility of the proposed precipitation against the precipitating CO₂ absorber.
