OLGA CO₂ TIDE (Transport and Integrated Domain Extensions)

Background
CO₂ Capture and Storage (CCS) is becoming an important technology component to reach global climate goals efficiently and in a cost-effective manner. CCS will also be key to set up carbon negative technologies beyond 2050. For the up scaling in number of active CCS projects required to meet current projections of demand, the projects will need to rely on accurate simulation technology in the design and planning phase, as well as during operations. The SLB simulators Olga (industry-standard tool for dynamic multiphase flow simulations) and Intersect (high-resolution reservoir simulator) both already play a key role in existing CCS projects, covering the transport and storage domain, respectively, by supporting assessment of safety risks, CAPEX and OPEX optimization, defining limiting operational envelopes etc. SLB continuously develops both simulators to improve the efficiency, accuracy, robustness, and versatility needed for future CCS developments.

Goal
The goal is to enable successful design and operation of CCS projects by way of enhanced simulation capabilities and workflows for Olga and Intersect for optimizing and de-risking design and operation of CCS facilities. The project targets technology advancements that are overreaching the boundaries between the three CCS domains (capture/ transport/ storage), and where significant R&D activities are required.

Activities
The project has three main activities:

(1) Enablement of transient well/near-wellbore simulations, providing more accurate prediction of reservoir response to rate changes and of Joule–Thomson (JT) -cooling in the near well bore reservoir zone.

(2) Addressing the need for consistent transfer of data for simulation purposes between the capture, transport, and storage domains.

(3) Enablement of risk assessment for corrosion and hydrate formation in CO₂ injection wells and pipelines. The occurrence of CO₂ corrosion is detrimental to CCS projects and must be avoided. Formation of hydrates may severely impact reservoir injectivity.

Results
The first results from a dynamic coupling between Olga and Intersect have been demonstrated to the partners in the project. We plan to deliver a first version of the coupling for testing by the partners towards the end of 2024

Further Work
The work in 2025 will be centered around closing the development and testing of the dynamic coupling between Olga and Intersect. Further, we will perform work in main activities (2) and (3).
