Background
An ISO Technical report for CO2 shipping has been requested by operators and other stakeholders in the industry for some time. DNV has been approached to lead the work to establishing such a document
The purpose of the technical report is to support consistency and compatibility in the design of CO2 carriers by addressing important areas where future standardization can add value to the further development of CCS value chains.
Ships carrying CO2 in bulk are regulated by the IMO IGC Code, which serves as the main technical design standard for the existing fleet of CO2 carriers. The CO2 ship transportation is currently limited to commercial trade (food, beverage, etc) and served by a handful smaller vessels. The increased focus on CCS and the development of new shipping concepts for transport of CO2 have raised questions and uncertainties related to the type of transportation concepts (storage conditions relating to pressure and temperature), CCS chain compatibility (equipment materials and CO2 composition), the range of product specifications, and the technical and operational reliability/safety of CO2 carriers.
The technical report discuss requirements and recommendations on ship type specific aspects related to safe and reliable design, construction and operation of CO2 carriers that are not already covered in existing guidelines, rules, and regulations, including IGC Code, Flag state and ship Classification rules. It also provide a summary of areas where research and development is needed to further support development of efficient ship based CCS infrastructure.
Goal
Develop an ISO Technical Report CO2 shipping
Activities
– Regular Working group meetings
– Development, Review and editation of report
– Plenary meeting ISO TC 265 to present status of report, align with the other working groups and plan for further work
– Regular meetings Norwegian Mirror committee TC 265
Results
ISO Report ISO/TR 27929 published November 2024
Further Work
The working group will continue to have regular meetings. One work proposal has come from the Japanese mirror committee which need to be reviewed by the working group next year. A plenary meeting for TC 265 will also take place in Amsterdam in March 2025
