Grenland Industrial CO₂ Capture and Storage (GICCS)

Summary:
The goal of the GICCS project has been to prepare for catch and utilisation of 1.2 million tons CO₂/year and explore the possibility for a common solution for handling CO₂ from the process industry in the Grenland region. The project is a part of the vision to make Grenland the world’s first climate positive industrial region. The participants have been CO₂ emitters, existing and potential CO₂ consumers, infrastructure owners, suppliers, research companies and academia. The project has been headed by the industry cluster Powered by Telemark.

The project has been organised in three technical and one techno-economic work packages. The alternatives which has been evaluated are 1) full absorption and desorption plant including condensation and temporary storage of liquid CO₂ at each emitter’s premises and 2) absorption plant at the emitters site and common facilities for desorption, condensation and temporary storage of CO₂. The latter solution includes two pipelines for transport of rich and lean amine between the plants on the west and east side of the Frier fjord. The need for energy and availability of energy has been evaluated for each of the alternatives. In addition, possible alternative energy sources and utilisation of CO₂ as feedstock for new chemical products (CCU) has been evaluated.

Techno-economical assessments of the various alternatives has been performed. The capex requirements for a common solution for desorption, condensation and temporary storage will not be lower than separate plants. A common solution though will increase the possibility of utilising existing “excess” energy, which can influence the operational costs positively. Access to reasonably priced energy is a prerequisite whatever technical solution will be chosen. Elements for digitalisation of a common desorption solution has been assessed.

The project shows that it is technically and financially possible to build and operate a common plant for desorption, condensation and temporary storage of CO₂.

The GICCS project has been presented in many different forums during the project, both to existing and potential new industries, technology providers, potential receivers of liquid CO₂ for permanent storage and on several conferences.

The GICCS project has been in contact with the other Norwegian CO₂-clusters and have participated in NPF’s (Norwegian Petroleum Society) conference in Oslo (Dec. 2023) and on Hydro/Bellona’s CCS conference in Oslo ( Jan. 2024)
