The Eyde Cluster initiated a study in 2018 to get an overview of how to attack the CO2 challenge at member companies. Gassnova supported the project which was carried out in cooperation with Sintef, and as a result, installation of a carbon capture (CC) pilot at Eramet Norway Sauda was concluded. Only metallurgical plants were involved, but the incinerator plant Returkraft AS entered during next phase and became candidate for a second pilot.
The goal for EydeCO2Tek was then to select technology and supplier of CC pilots at Eramet Sauda and Returkraft. Several technologies were studied and Eramet selected the CryocapTM solution, a combined adsorption (PSA) / cryogenic process from Air Liquidewhile Returkraft ended up with two technologies – a membrane separation process from Air Products and an amine-based process from Compact Carbon Capture (3C).
The most important selection criteria have been related to long term compatible technology, TRL level >5, potential for meeting the goals for 2030 and 2050, cost, avoid toxic components and obtain acceptable CO2 quality for subsea storage. CO2-emission goal for Eramet is 43 % reduction before 2030 (and 80% before 2050), and Returkraft is aiming for CCS of all fossil and significant part of the Biogenic CO2 in the same period. The pilot campaigns are scheduled to start in 2022/-23 and technology selection for commercial operation must be taken in 2024 in order to meet the expected improvements. In the meantime, preparations for the pilot phase, including application for funding, will be carried out. From this stage on the individual plants will take project leadership.
