DigiMon; Digital Monitoring of CO₂ Storage Projects

The project is based on results from various technical and social science projects and research carried out between the consortium’s partners. DigiMon partners have experience in monitoring CO₂ stocks and oil and gas fields, both at sea and on land. The partners are instrument suppliers (eg Silixa, OCTIOenv), research suppliers (eg universities) and operators (eg Equinor, REPSOL).

CO₂ storage must be cost-effective and easily scalable in size and quantity. A key component of any CCS project is measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV). The DigiMon project combines fiber optic sensor technology (DxS), seismic point sensors and gravimetry with proven Ethernet-based digital communication and real-time, web-based smart computing software, with the aim of:

Monitoring of CO₂ migration in the reservoir, mainly by means of external passive geophysical measurements of changes in saturation and pressure. Monitoring the integrity of the well, mainly with downhole sensors
Load monitoring, including monitoring of CO₂ migration and early detection of CO₂ leakage anomalies.

The innovation in the DigiMon project lies in the fact that it integrates a wide range of technologies for MMV in CO₂ storage (ie distributed fiber optic sensor technology (DxS), seismic point sensors and gravimetry). Combined with Ethernet-based digital communications and near-real-time, web-based smart computing software, the DigiMon project will provide a new and cost-effective early warning solution for monitoring CO₂ storage and surface barriers.

The overall goal of the DigiMon project is to accelerate the implementation of CCS by developing and demonstrating an affordable, flexible, and smart Digital Monitoring alert system, to monitor the CO₂ reservoir and overhead barrier system.

Key project goals include:
Develop individual components in the system into a common, high TRL.
