Background and purpose of the project:
Char II is built on Char-C (project no. 617136) which was a technical-economic feasibility study conducted in 2017 and 2018 to look at the possibility of capturing CO2 on the production of carbon reduction material used in the process industry. Aker Carbon Capture was chosen as a capture technology partner, after also researching VPSA and membrane technology. Furthermore, one looked at the possibilities of establishing in Norway with new production, and came to the conclusion that Kollsnes in Øygarden municipality was the right location due to the nature of the plots and proximity to the Northern Lights CO2 reception facility.
In Char II, Carbonor will verify findings and decisions from Char-C. They will capture CO2 in Q1 2021 at Polchar's plant with Aker Carbon Capture’s Mobile Test Unit (MTU). Carbonor and partners will further develop the opportunities at Kollsnes wrt localization and local collaboration to realize synergies and ensure that there is a business model and a business plan that provides financial, social and environmental sustainability.

Carbonor plan to have the first two production lines ready in 2024 with a volume of 55,000 tonnes of reduction material. With increased demand, they will increase by two production lines at a time with a maximum number of lines of 10, corresponding to 250,000 tonnes. Carbonor will then capture about 500,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
