BIGH2 – Enabling Pre-Combustion CCS Plants (SP 2, fase 1)

Phase 1

The aim of the project is to develop a fundamentally new gas turbine burner for lean premixed combustion of hydrogen. The project is divided into 3 phases and the overall objective is to develop a hydrogen burner capable of achieving less than 10 ppm NOx with high efficiency. This burner will then be commercialised.

The aim of Phase 1 is to investigate one or more designs that have potential for further development and to identify industrial partners to continue the project in subsequent phases.

For the first time in this type of project, direct numerical simulation (DNS) has been used extensively to model the turbulent flow around the fuel nozzle. This approach allows a very high level of detail in the description of the fuel-air mixing patterns. In addition to DNS, more conventional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to cover a parameter space beyond that investigated by DNS, as well as advanced experiments using laser diagnostics.
