Acoustic and Chemical Technologies for offshore geological carbon storage (ACT4STORAGE )

Background and purpose of the project:
A pilot project, 257234, Guidelines for offshore CCS leakage detection and monitoring – NGI with partners formed the background for Act4Storage. A number of national and international R&D projects have also been carried out to clarify leakage monitoring technology. Act4Storage will build on all that has been published by this.

The project’s overall goal is safer and more efficient monitoring of any leaks over a CO₂ storage through optimal use and combination of existing sensor systems. Systematic testing of the most relevant sensor technologies will be carried out, in order to map and document the potential of the various sensor types with regard to CO₂. Testing must take place in the lab and coastal environment. A set of specific guidelines will be prepared to support operators in their work to develop a cost-effective monitoring solution.

Project potential:
Act4Storage is an important contribution to the development of a monitoring solution for a first offshore full-scale CO₂ storage facility. It is also important in dialogue between the operator and regulatory authorities in an area where there is great uncertainty both in terms of how regulatory requirements are to be operationalized, what costs this may entail and what is technically possible. This is an important basis for developing service providers to be able to implement this: Parameter identification and recommendations for baseline study

• Practical guidelines for optimal technology selection and use, reducing costs and ensuring reliability
• Potential introduction of existing technologies developed by Norwegian and international industry for e.g. fishing purposes, to offshore CO₂ monitoring
• Building on previous research and addressing remaining challenges related to sensor performance such as detection and quantification of CO₂ leakage.
