The project will develop a self-regulating valve that can shut off the penetration of CO2 into production wells in oil fields where CO2 is used for increased oil recovery. The same technology can possibly also be used in pressure-relieving wells in aquifers where CO2 is stored so that the storage reservoir can be utilized more efficiently. This pilot project includes valve design, performance testing with CO2 and well fluids, and meetings with oil companies on testing the valve in the field.
