CO₂ capture from hydrogen production at Haugaland Næringspark – (Haugaland CCS)

The CLIMIT idea study «Haugaland CCS» has explored and mapped potential CO₂ capture volumes and regional as well as export demand for hydrogen, this centered around a prospective hydrogen production from natural gas with CO₂ capture at Haugaland Næringspark. Hydrogen for decarbonized steel production has been used as a scenario that can enable large-scale regional hydrogen use. Power requirements for a steel plant together with power consumption of a gas-reforming plant have been assessed against a new power connection under investigation.

Furthermore, CO₂ capture volumes related to the size of a gas-reforming plant have been mapped and assessed together with possible CO₂ capture from other large emission sources in the region. Together, this provides an estimate of the order of magnitude of future, potential CO₂ capture volumes in the region and thus a basis for assessing opportunities and needs for shared infrastructure for CO₂ transport. Moreover, the mapping enables comparing demand for permanent storage of CO₂ against the current Northern Lights framework. The potential for capturing CO₂ emissions in the region may, depending on the size of a gas-reforming plant for export and regional use, give total annual capture volumes significantly greater than 1.5 Mtonn per year which is the framework for phase 1 of Northern Lights.

As a next step towards increasing the knowledge on how to best utilize synergies between different plants in the region it is recommended to conduct techno-economic assessment of options for shared CO₂ transport infrastructure and compare this against the different, planned phases of Northern Lights and potential new fields for permeant storage of CO₂.
