Kjeller Dense phase CO₂ Corrosion project IV (KDC-IV)

Background
The KDC-IV project is a continuation of earlier KDC projects (phase I, II and III). The purpose of the project is to provide experimental data, knowledge and tools that can be used to define limits for impurities in CO₂ transport systems. This will contribute to optimize security and costs for CO₂ transport.

Objective
The overall objective of the project is to provide experimental results that can be used by the CCS industry to prevent negative effects of impurities with respect to chemical reactions, corrosion and formation of solids in CO₂ transportation systems. Transport in both pipelines and ship transport is studied.

Activities
Several experiments will be performed with different combinatiohns of impurities in dense phase CO₂, both with and without corrosion specimens. This will include conditions and impurities that have not been tested for dense phase CO₂ sysems previously. The experiments are performed under conditions representative for both ship transport (low temperature and moderate pressure) and for pipeline transport of liquid CO₂ (ambienttemperature, high pressure).

The results from the KDC projects have been used to develop further OLI Systems’ thermodynamic model, which now can be used also to simulate chemical reactions in liquid or supercritical CO₂. The results from the KDC-IV project will be benchmarked with OLI simulations in order to validate the model. This kind of knowledge will be very useful for operators that need to simulate real CCS projects.

The KDC-IV project will provide extensive knowledge on corrosion and chemical reactions in dense phase CO₂. This will provide background for setting specifications for safe transport of dense phase CO₂ in pipelines and ships. Several papers have been published with results from the KDC projects.

Future plans
The project will study onset of formation of separate acid phases in a dense phase CO₂ system with different combinations of impurities. The actual composition of such acid phases in dense phase will be studied. The behaviour of precipitated acid droplets in a flowing system will be studied in a high pressure flow loop setup. Experiments will also be performed to study the effect of different impurities in CO₂ transported in the gas phase.
