ECCSEL “European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure” is an organization that will facilitate coordinated construction, use and sharing of infrastructure for research at CCS in Europe. Norway, led by NTNU, has been a key driver in ECCSEL.
The purpose of the project was to prepare for the start-up of ECCSEL, and it has included the following activities: Establishment of an administrative office for ECCSEL at NTNU in Trondheim, agreements with partners on participation in ECCSEL, financing of the organization, and a plan for infrastructure development in Norway and coordination of this with other participating countries.
The project has reached its goals and ECCSEL entered the operational phase in the autumn of 2015 with funding from Horizon 2020 (Infradev-3) and contributions from partners. ECCSEL is based on an agreement between 14 partners from nine European countries. 43 existing facilities will open to researchers from other participating countries in 2016. Plans will be made for upgrading and new construction of infrastructure in the years to come.
