CO₂LOS IV

Background
Brevik Engineering and SINTEF have collaborated for several years to develop improved logistics solutions for the transport of CO₂ by ships, along with industrial partners. This project builds upon the previous projects CO₂LOS II (conducted from 2018 to 2020) and CO₂LOS III (2021-2023).
The main purpose of the project is to reduce the costs and uncertainties associated with CO₂ transport, thereby increasing industry interest and opportunities to use Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as an emissions-reducing measure. The project aims to study how CO₂ transport can be designed to minimize costs, emissions, energy consumption, and material usage.

For the CO₂los IV project, the main objective is to focus on realistic cases and develop the cost estimation tool. Initially, a sorting analysis will be conducted for each of the four scenarios, analysing various alternative logistics solutions to find the optimal supply chain from one or more sources to a storage location. An internally developed cost tool will be used to estimate CO₂ emissions for each step in the chain. Furthermore, in-depth analyses of each case will consider design, costs, and life cycle assessment (LCA).

Goals
The project aims to:
1. Develop knowledge, experiences, tools, and results that partners can apply in their own projects.
2. Reduce investment risks in CCS projects.
3. Improve decision-making support for future CCS projects.
4. Enhance expertise beyond the project partners through publications, conferences, and open reporting.

The project benefits from a strong international partnership, drawing on experiences from existing plans, pilot and full-scale projects involving upscaling and modification of existing transport solutions, where cost reduction and effective operational procedures are essential.

Activities
Since the project has recently started, we have not many activities finalized yet. But the following activities are planned:
1. Work Package 1: Define four different CCS chains, focusing on transport solutions and challenges.
2. Work Package 2: Further develop the cost tool used in CO₂LOS III to compare different transport solutions and estimate costs for various modules. This enhanced version will also include emissions in the logistics analysis.
3. Work Package 3: Address a case with multiple sources in Europe, including transport along rivers and to an offshore storage site.
4. Work Package 4: Investigate a case involving return cargo, exploring the possibility of utilizing the ship in both directions.
5. Work Package 5: Study long-distance CO₂ transport using large ships in Asia.
6. Work Package 6: Will be defined once the other work packages are underway.
7. Work package 7: Project control and management, dissemination activities

Expectations
Looking ahead, we envision that the cost and emissions assessment tool can be further utilized in other projects to evaluate different transport solutions. Additionally, the detailed case studies could serve as a solid foundation for initiating CCS projects, provided the solutions we arrive at are economically sustainable.
