Clean Energy Production from Offshore Natural Gas (CEPONG)

The project is a techno-economic feasibility study that evaluates alternatives for value chains and different ways of cost savings for offshore electricity production from natural gas (NG) with CO₂ capture and storage (CCS).

Possible sources of improvement with respect to CAPEX and OPEX that will be examined are as follows:
– Reducing the capture cost by using already available energy on the platform
– Avoidance of transport of natural gas and CO₂ over long distances
Use of captured CO₂ for Enhanced Oil or Enhanced Gas Recovery (EOR / EGR)
– Other process integration synergies due to having NG production, processing and CCS in the same place.

In addition, the effects of parameters such as gas volume, gas quality, distance to the onshore market, the price of natural gas, electricity price, the potential of transmission cables for electricity, the capacity of the power grid and fluctuations etc. will be investigated through a comprehensive parameter study.

The study will identify and quantify the technological and commercial potential of the concept given different global conditions, and increase the understanding of the risks and opportunities for these value chains for natural gas and electricity production. It is expected that the project will facilitate the development and implementation of technical solutions necessary to realize the concept.
