Flue gas degradation of amines

The project investigates the liquid chemistry of amine-based CO₂ capture plants with the aim of identifying and quantifying degradation products formed via reactions with NOx and O2 in the flue gas. Development, evaluation and validation of suitable chemical analysis methods is an important part of the work to be able to reveal products and reaction mechanisms.

The focus is particularly on potential formation and release of substances that are hazardous to health and the environment. Emissions to air of selected components will be estimated by combining measurements and mathematical simulation models. Experience in the project will be used to propose a procedure for evaluating and qualifying amine-based solvents. A further goal is to get a tool to provide guidelines for optimal choice of liquids / mixtures and process conditions to minimize emissions and / or formation of potentially environmentally hazardous substances.
