Rapid Optimization for Multilayer History-Matching of the CO₂ Plume on the 2019 Sleipner Benchmark Model

SINTEF will demonstrate that it is possible to recreate the observed development of CO₂ plume on Sleipner by simulation on the new benchmark model. To achieve the best possible result, they want to calibrate the model in terms of input parameters and geometry. To carry out this project, it is planned to use the research group’s well-established open source MRST (MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox), which contains support for reading the simulation grid, simulating CO₂ flow using vertical averaging models, and non-linear optimization algorithms that can be used for model calibration. .

The goal is to:
1) Validate the benchmark model by demonstrating the correspondence between observed data (of the CO₂ plume) and simulations run on the model.
2) Demonstrate the value of fast simulations based on vertical equilibrium in a workflow for history adaptation of CO₂ storage projects. 3) Further develop MRST’s functionality to model CO₂ storage in layered geology, and make this functionality available in the form of open source code. 4) Propose a workflow that can also be used and built on by other actors.
