Oxyfuel feasibility project

The aim of the project has been to evaluate the market potential for oxyfuel technology and its produced CO₂ – as well as to assess the technical and economic performance of an oxyfuel turbine. Furthermore, the project was to prepare a pilot scale demonstration of oxyfuel technology in a gas turbine. This project has been the first phase in the plans for a full-scale demonstration of oxyfuel technology in a gas turbine (3 phases).

In the first part of the project, an optimized oxyfuel cycle was chosen for further concept studies, this had an efficiency of 47% (including CO₂ compression and O2 production). This has formed the basis for cost estimates of a 125 MW power plant with CO₂ capture.

The largest part of the project has focused on demonstration of an combustion system for oxyfuel combustion in a gas turbine, this has included detailed concept and design studies and a dedicated burner has been built (at Siemens) for experimental studies of a final concept. This has been tested at SINTEF Energi in three test campaigns focusing on mapping stability areas for such a burner that will be operated in such an oxyfuel cycle where nitrogen is replaced with CO₂. Testing has first been carried out at atmospheric environments and further with pressurization up to 4.2 bar – and at these environments complete operation maps for the burner have been specified. At Siemens, material tests have also been carried out with a focus on operation and operation in oxyfuel environments, how selected materials will be affected in pressurized conditions and exposed to other components / molecules than in “normal” gas turbine operation.

In summary, a test site for the next phase has been proposed; at Lund University where a Turbec T100 gas turbine has been installed. Costs and measures related to the design and adaptation of this for pilot scale demonstration of a complete oxyfuel cycle have been reported
